Algae – super-plants with high potential

Algae have become more and more popular recently being used as a super food in meals or nutritional supplements. And the outlook on their market development assumes an even brighter future. More than justified in our opinion as algae offer incredibly many benefits. They’re rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals – and the icing on the cake is: they’re also vegan which makes them fit perfectly in a continuously growing market. From an ecological point of view algae also seem pretty powerful being a rapidly regrowing raw material with much more efficiency than other plant species. Did you know about the existence of algae that are able to increase their size 16-fold in less than 24 hours?

Usually, algae are divided into two groups: macro algae (big plants) and micro algae which are basically microscopically small single-cell organisms that can only be recognized as a greenish liquid with the naked eye. In Asian countries algae have been a very common food, just think about miso soups or your sushi being wrapped up with seaweed.

Chlorella and spirulina are probably the best-known micro algae species. Powdered chlorella consists of 50 % protein and is also a great source of vitamin B12 which can otherwise only be found in fish, meat, dairy products and eggs. Moreover, this algae is full of magnesium, iron, essential amino acids and omega 3 fatty acids whilst being non-allergenic. Chlorella also contains chlorophyll that has clarifying, detoxifying and antioxidative effects on our bodies.

Spirulina is no less magnificent in its benefits: it even consists of 60 % protein and is a great source of important B-vitamins, beta carotene, zinc, selenium and manganese.

There is no need in pointing out how much algae deserve to be titled super foods for being this healthy and sustainable. In order to benefit from their good features, please pay attention to their origin as they might be contaminated with heavy metals sometimes. Working with selected raw material suppliers enables us to minimize this risk as best as possible.
