What are functional foods?

Functional foods have become quite a trend within the last few years. Basically it’s food that has additional health benefits beyond nutrition itself. These positive effects on our wellbeing and health base on enrichment of food with further nutrients or substances. Although being marketed for several years, this group of food still lacks a legal definition in Europe. The foods are usually enriched with vitamins, minerals, protein, probiotics or unsaturated fatty acids.

Typical functional food is:

  • protein bake mixes (like bread, cupcakes, pancakes)

  • smoothie bowls

  • protein porridge, spreads, pasta etc.

  • flavour powder

  • meal replacement shakes/bars

  • water infuser

Yet, these functional foods are different from food supplements which are mostly marketed in concentrated dosage forms like capsules or tablets.
