What are supplements?

Supplements are a group of foods intended to supplement our general diet, usually marketed in dose form such as capsules, tablets etc. They contain concentrated nutrients or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect. Those nutrients like vitamins, minerals, etc. exist in various natural foods but in smaller concentrations. They can either be extracted from natural sources or synthetically manufactured in the lab.

Food supplements (also often referred to as nutrition or dietary supplements) are sold over the counter without any prescription needed. Typical distribution channels are drug stores, supermarkets, pharmacies and online marketplaces. Special attention to the origin should always be paid when supplements are purchased online because foreign manufacturing policies may not always meet our high European quality standards or may even contain permitted substances.

Typical nutrients used for supplements are:

  • vitamins and similar substances

  • minerals and trace elements

  • other substances like fatty and amino acids, plant extracts, probiotics

Supplements come in various form like tablets hard or soft capsules, vials with liquids, powders, granulate or even gummies that become more and more popular.

Supplements are not supposed to cure or prevent any illnesses, yet they are subject to additional labelling regulations like product designation, content of nutrients, recommended intake and specific information.
