Paper and cardboard boxes will remain an important material when it comes to appealing product packaging. Since sustainability and a responsible use of resources are crucial in our everyday life (either as manufacturer or consumers), we count on FSC® certified material.
The Forest Stewardship Council® is a foundation established in 1993 in Brazil fighting against deforestation in the Amazon jungle. Today FSC® is a global standard for sustainable forestry and represents the collective interests of environmental associations, economy and social organizations.
The following criteria need to be fulfilled:
FSC minimum standards that are globally valid for FSC-certified products made of wood, regardless of the wood’s origin (e.g. preservation of biological diversity, water resources, soils and land use rights)
specific national requirements adjusted to the economical, ecological and social circumstances within the concerned country
annual controls by independent certification authorities
reviews of individual forestry companies
Concerning packaging, which is our linking point to FSC®, the following seals apply:
FSC Mix: at least 70 % of the used material is FSC®-certified or from post-consumer recycling material, the rest comes from controlled origins. Additionally, the use of pre-consumer recycling material is allowed for paper products as well. In this case, pre-consumer recycling material includes material that has been labelled as garbage although it hasn’t finished the product life cycle yet.
FSC Recycled: the material is made from 100 % recycling material. As mentioned above, paper products are allowed to use both pre- and post-consumer material.
As you can see the well-known seals and labels represent a great deal of information about the origin of your product’s packaging.
